Bala (botanical name “Sida cordifolia”), meaning ‘youth’ in Sanskrit is a powerful Ayurvedic aphrodisiac herb, notably used for reversing penile erectile dysfunction and infertility. It is very efective in treating male and female sexual dysfunction.
Bala is a weed that grows wild in wastelands and along roadsides. The weeds are found throughout the tropical and sub-tropical plains all over India and Sri Lanka. Bala balances all three doshas: Vata, Pittah, and Kapha.
Bala is also useful for maintaining youth and vitality, nourishes and regenerates the cells of the body, strengthens immunity, stimulates formation of healthy new tissue, and helpful for all adverse pulmonary conditions (has strong broncho-dilating properties but with less potential for misuse than Ma Huang, it’s TCM [Traditional Chinese Medicine] cousin).
A major alkaloid in Bala (but ib very low levels) resembles the major alkaloid in Ephedra/Ma Hauang (ephedrine) making Bala a stimulant. Because Bala is good for the heart and is a stimulant, the herb has become known as a premiere heart stimulant herb. In addition to being a stimulant, Bala is analgesic, demulcent, diuretic, nervine, rejuvenative, and tonic in nature.
Bala helps to overcome all diseases of the generative organs and is very helpful in healing from sexually transmitted diseases, which result in debilitation of the sex glands if untreated.
Indian herbal folk medicine ‘Tripura Sundari’ in common language means “thrice beautiful” and pertains to Bala, Ashoka, and Shatavari. These three herbs are recommended for beautifying women.
